Adobe Unveils Firefly Generative AI Tools

March 21, 2023
minute read

Adobe launched Firefly on Tuesday, an artificial intelligence tool that lets users edit images quickly.

‍

The initial Firefly model is primarily concerned with producing visual and textual effects. A product demo for a "Create Variations" option, for instance, was shown in a sample Adobe film. In the sample video, Adobe Firefly utilizes AI to build various renditions of a lighthouse by highlighting the element in a layered work of art.

‍

In another instance, Adobe demonstrates how to automatically convert an image from a summer scene to a winter one by taking a picture of a summer scene and typing "change scene to winter day."

‍

By employing generative AI to construct a paintbrush based on elements already present in a picture, Firefly can also transform the photo or image a user is working on without the user's intervention.

‍

The release of Adobe's new product coincides with a pivotal turning point for both Adobe and AI as a whole. In September, the business paid $20 billion for the design tool Figma, announcing at the time that it will incorporate features from other companies.

‍

Firefly will debut as a private beta, according to Adobe.

‍

Since the rapid launch of OpenAI's ChatGPT, investment in AI has increased. OpenAI and Steady Diffusion, another AI company, both provide generative AI image products.

‍

Ethical issues have plagued new AI tools. Concerns about ChatGPT and similar products center on the models' potential to "hallucinate" plausible-sounding but false information.

‍

Concerns about the models stealing artist content, regenerating it, and presenting it without credit or permission from the creator have been expressed for imaging technology like DALL-E or Stable Diffusion.

‍

The firm currently has non-AI platforms that do that, but according to Adobe, Firefly will emphasize giving creators "options to benefit from your skills and creativity and secure your work."
